| Dear Friends |
January 2005 Reaching the Unreached - Tsunami Appeal
RTU Trustee, Richard Adams, and new Administrator, Max Philbrick, at present visiting RTU to keep in touch with Brother James and others, have sent the following update for your consideration.
| The RTU villages are well over 100 miles from the coastline affected by the Tsunami tragedy, but RTU UK have been anxious to offer help.
Brother James writes: “We are offering to help rebuild one or two of the villages affected by the Tsunami. Each may need 100 houses and maybe other buildings, such as a school. We are waiting for villages needing help to be given the necessary government go ahead.
| We have also decided to build another Children’s Village nearby to accommodate orphans from the Tsunami as well as orphans from the rapidly escalating AIDS pandemic. 2.5 acres of land have been purchased, and plans and layout are ready. (In fact the latest news from Brother is that 4 RTU building teams are on site and a start has been made already). There will be 16 cottages to take 7-8 children with a ‘mother’, who may be a widow from the disaster. Other buildings will be required; a meeting hall, manager’s house and office, playground equipment, storage, water tower and pipelines, a small clinic, shop and all the equipment, fencing and furniture. We have long experience in all this and plan to have everything ready by the 4th April. At the same time we will be training ‘mothers’ and looking for a good manager. Please keep in mind that this will not only be for Tsunami orphans, though they will get top priority. I am deeply grateful, in the name of all these victims, for any gifts you can make.”
| This is a time of great challenge for RTU with the steep rise in HIV/AIDS and the need to help and rehabilitate those affected by the Tsunami. Meeting immediate needs is only the beginning. Each child accommodated will need support until they finish their education, which may include time at college or university.
| In spite of the short time which has elapsed since the December newsletter, this is a one-off appeal on behalf of these unfortunate children. You might like to make a contribution towards supporting the children in the new Children’s Village, and providing funds for house building near the coast. |
| In the March newsletter we will update you on the progress being made on the relief efforts in hand made by RTU. We fully realise that by now you may well have contributed as a result of our last newsletter or to another appeal for this huge relief effort. However, we ask you to consider the above and give what you can to the RTU Tsunami Appeal.
